Racism: The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. It’s everywhere. My first run in with racism was in elementary school. We had received a new student. She was quiet and nobody seemed to speak to her. I didn’t understand why. So naturally, I went and attempted to befriend her. My “friends” were appalled. When asking why my friends were so upset with me they said, “Why are you talking to her! She’s Mexican.” The tone when they used the word “Mexican.” It took me aback. They said it as if it was a bad thing. All kinds of questions swam through my head all at once. I was confused. Looking back now, I realize how vile and toxic those girls were. The sad thing is, some people don’t see any problem with that. They think it’s okay to judge someone because of their race. Recently, this topic again has been brought to our attention. After the recent election, a lot of racist remarks were being used such as, “Donald Trump is sending you home” or “Go back to Mexico.” That is NOT okay. And Helene and I are working to make sure everyone knows that. racism is still here. And we are working to make others realize that.
